Why am I writing about Breast Cancer?
Doesn’t this website focus on pediatric, adolescent and young adult cancers?
Yes, it does.
In case you didn’t already know, Breast Cancer in Young Adult Women can be very lethal. According to National Cancer Institute “women ages 15 to 34 and 35 to 54 die more frequently from breast cancer than any other disease” ( http://obf.cancer.gov/financial/attachments/06Factbk.pdf).
Just the other day a friend told me about a 20 year old young woman recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Her family is shocked and feeling helpless. As many of us know, being diagnosed with cancer is a very frightening and life altering experience. Fortunately, there are many organizations that can provide support and information about breast cancer. Here are two groups I would like to highlight: The Young Survival Coalition (www.youngsurvival.org) and Team Shan (www.teamshan.ca). Both organizations are lead by dedicated women seeking to reach out and help breast cancer survivors. I recommend you check out these organizations.
We know how important research is to finding better ways to treat and cure cancer. What about prevention. I recently learned about fundraising efforts by the Cleveland Clinic to support the development of research for a Breast Cancer Vaccine http://giving.ccf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=vaccine.
What can I say…it certainly makes sense to support efforts for breast cancer research given the number of young adult women diagnosed each year with this horrible disease..
So I would like to plug a very nice upcoming event right here in Cleveland, Ohio.
For $35 you can support the breast cancer research, eat lunch with your friends, and have fun checking out the latest fashions courtesy of MACY’S.
